In the present society, information technology is developing remarkably and plays important roles in various fields. After graduating from high school, I decided to study abroad in Japan in order to learn information skills acceptable in society. My first choice -- Faculty of Informatics of Shizuoka University -- was a culture-technology fused faulty, where I could proceed with the study in a broader range of fields. Having majored in science and technology, I was very interested in cultural knowledge.
Then, I believed that the study and research would be worthwhile. Shizuoka University has a system for admitting foreign students. The university cooperates with many universities around the world and aggressively accepts many foreign students and researchers every year. When I accessed the website, I found all kinds of support which gave me the impression that foreign students can devote themselves to their studies without anxiety. Finally, the university campus is located in Hamamatsu, which is said to be a town of industry and music. I was attracted also by the landscape. which includes Lake Hamana, etc. For the reasons mentioned above, I chose Shizuoka University for my destination of studying abroad.
It has been almost two years since I graduated from the university. At the university, I had a fulfilling life where I could enjoy my hobbies in addition to studying. I participated with my friend in various events of the university, such as the Ekiden Road Race in June every year, the University Festival in November, etc. My best memory during my stay in Japan was the Hamamatsu Japan-China Exchange Meeting sponsored by an NPO. The objective of the Hamamatsu Japan-China Culture Exchange Meeting was to give the opportunity of intercultural communication to local people and foreign students, through which I deepened my understanding about Japanese culture. By engaging in various exchange activities, I came to know much about the importance of intercultural communication and I believe they were very significant activities.
I am now working in Nagoya installing software related to vehicle onboard network systems into substrates (semiconductors) for controlling various functions of the vehicle. The basic knowledge, logical way of thinking and presentation technique that I learned at university are very helpful all over my R&D work. In the workplace, I am communicating with others all the time on the job. In collaborative work with people of diverse backgrounds, the communication skills I acquired through participation in international exchanges at the university and in local area and activities for understanding intercultural exchange are absolutely useful.
Differences in culture and life-style habits cause various conflicts and misunderstandings. In particular, problems attributable to a lack of intercultural understanding are expected to become more and more serious to such an extent as to develop into war as “globalization” advances in the future. Through exchange and conversation, let’s remove the barriers of different cultures and promote mutual understanding to build a peaceful world.
