Many people have lived in Shizuoka Prefecture since the Stone Age and Jomon Period. It is famous for the zenith of prosperity as the birth place of Tokugawa Ieyasu of the Edo Era. Today, a lot of historical sites, culture and traditions symbolizing Japan remain. For example, in Shizuoka City and Hamamatsu City, where there are university campuses, are found the site of an old castle where Shogun Ieyasu passed his days and Tosho-gu Shrine, which was dedicated to him. Traditional handicrafts manufactured by artisans who were gathered by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Shogun, from all over Japan for the construction of Sengen Shrine and the textile industry are the origin of modern cotton textile industry. Hence, the culture and spirit fostered in the long history have been handed down to the present age.
